Trying to brazing a steel to copper connection do i have to use a kind of flux or is correct do it as a copper to copper.
Brazing steel to copper.
But will also cost more and requires the use of an acetylene or mapp gas torch to melt the brazing rod.
All i had on that day was a cutting torch but it allowed for a soft enough flame to get the job done.
Use the right brazing rod material for the metal used in your project.
I use oxi acetylene torch and use silfox solder.
The brazing rod should be melted by the heat of the metal pieces being joined not by direct contact with the flame of the torch.
Thats a good indication that brazing material flowed where it was needed.

Clean and flux the area to be silver brazed.
Use a torch that produces a high intensity flame.
When brazing brass or bronze fittings stay silv white flux is required with these alloys.
These alloys contain phosphorus and are self fluxing on copper.
With proper flux provided in the joint brazing steel can be done with mechanized torch setup or within induction coils depending on requirements and availability of equipment.
Technically you can either braze or solder though you cannot braze with solder or solder with brazing rods.
When brazing iron steel or other ferrous metals select one of the stay silv brazing alloys such as safety silv 45 or safety silv 56 with safety silv white brazing flux.
The higher the silver content the stronger the bond but the hotter the temperature needed to melt the filler metal.
But you can attach copper to steel with silver solder using a propane torch and call it whatever you like.
Recommended rods by metal type.
A table listing copper base alloys can be found in a commercial publication.
Copper phosphorous brazing welding rods.
Pure copper and copper zinc filler metals are used for brazing steel and other materials.
